This was a tough decision.
I got a call from a local talk radio producer here in Fresno. Okay, to be specific, it was Conservative talk radio.
The producer had called me some time ago and having never listened to the show, I decided to listen to some archived episodes in which I found the host speaking not so kindly about one of the organizations I serve, a non-partisan, faith-based community organizing group which certainly appears to lean left but it is officially non-partisan.
I try not to engage in this style of rhetoric but I wrestled with continuing to be unfairly characterized on the air by someone who doesn’t know us or standing up and attempting to educate the host and his listeners. I knew they were casting the baited hook but I weighed the choices.
The subject played into my decision. An imam up in Davis had made some comments that were inappropriate, anti-Semitic and potentially inciting violence.
I was not terribly interested in engaging in the interfaith affairs of another community. By the time the radio station reached out to me, the Muslim and Jewish communities in Davis were already beginning the work of repair and I’m not interested in throwing fuel onto a fire that people are working to put out.
So, I responded that I could only really speak about the very positive relationship between the Muslim and Jewish communities here in Fresno. The radio host agreed. Unsurprisingly, he tried to get me to speak out against the Muslim leader in Davis which I was not interested in doing. I didn’t find it that difficult to stay on point because we really have created a great interfaith community here in Fresno. It’s supportive, warm and friendly and includes a significant variety of religious groups. It’s not perfect but it’s pretty amazing.
Ultimately, in this case, I made the right decision and the response I got from friends in the local Muslim community indicated that it was worth sticking my neck out. As I indicated on air, perhaps the world around us can learn from what we’ve built here in Fresno and benefit from our model.
I still can't figure out how to pull up the link to his show without having to sign up for iHeartRadio but there's a link on my Facebook page you can follow if you want to hear the segment...
Proviso… while my segment aired at 5 p.m. on a Friday afternoon, I taped it much earlier in the day.
I am so sorry you had to deal with all of this. You have always been good at pulling us all together. Stay strong. Miss you. Karen
