I really did not expect to see this in my lifetime... the actual need to combat steps that could lead to internments.
Over the years, I've seen the words of Martin Niemöller, the Protestant pastor who spoke out against Hitler and spent seven years in concentration camps.
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out... because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out... because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out... because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me... and there was no one left to speak for me.
Apparently, Niemöller gave different versions during different speeches but you get the idea.
And today we add the Muslims.
Across the Jewish world, I've been impressed to see so many Jewish leaders proclaiming that we would register as Muslim if a registry were instituted. I agree and I will do so.
It's easy to say that we would... Niemöller spoke out and was sent to a concentration camp.
I admit, I'm scared. I really don't want to be carted off to an internment camp. Is it really a possibility? Is this what our predecessors contemplated in Germany? But I do think it's much less likely for anyone to pull off such an atrocity if it's clear that any registry has been rendered useless by overwhelming allies. So, we must stand up.
The hateful letter sent to Muslim communities in California arrived here in Fresno yesterday. Article in the Fresno Bee
And here was our response... Letter supporting our Muslim brothers and sisters
It's here. It's real.
It's time to speak out.
