I’ve learned a great deal over the years from my wife, Rabbi Laura.
One of my favorite lessons helps orient me properly regarding our youth.
We often hear people describe youth as our future, but Rabbi Laura reminds us that the youth are our ‘now.’
This weekend’s regional NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth) convention, right here in Fresno, showed how the youth continue to take leadership roles in our community doing the great work of Tikkun Olam, making our world a better place.
Almost 100 teens converged upon Temple Beth Israel and from here they fanned out throughout the city engaging in projects that made a difference today.
I went to see the group who volunteered at the park adjacent to Louis Slater Elementary School, providing activities for the local students who do not always have the necessary attention to help keep them from negative choices. Our teens showed the local kids that there are big people who care about them and root for their success.
It was all the sweeter to see the activity take place at one of the schools named for the caring members of the Jewish community who gave so much of themselves to improve the lot of others, and to see Dewey and Marie Slater come out to cheer on the kids volunteering at the campus named for Dewey’s grandfather.
Yes, our youth will undoubtedly be leader of our future, but the work they do today and the energy they bring makes a difference now.
