I suppose it is appropriate that I spent much of Christmas Eve reading a book about the challenges and triumphs of bringing Christians and Jews together.
Christians & Jews in Dialogue, Learning in the Presence of the Other by Mary C. Boys and Sara S. Lee is an in-depth look at the work the two have done in created programs and opportunities for inter-religious dialogue especially between Catholics and Jews. The two authors are outstanding scholars and educators and quite knowledgeable in their respective religions.
I found reading about their experience all the more interesting after just having completed our own local Catholic-Jewish dialogue. Both Boys and Lee were featured in the video clips that introduced each of the six topics we discussed.
What I found most compelling about their thesis was the notion that better understanding of the other could be achieved through better understanding of our own background.
I’ve just purchased a slew of books on Christian-Jewish understanding and am beginning to wade through them. I hope that the greater knowledge I gain through this study will be helpful to others who are interested in pursuing this area further.
